Preston Market
If elected, I promise to do everything I can to put Preston Market in public hands. Preston Market is Darebin's greatest asset, and unless it is owned by the community, then it will always be under threat from greedy developers.
Why Public Ownership?
There has been a long battle to save Preston Market from redevelopment. It's easy to forget that not long ago, the Labor State Government was proposing to demolish Preston Market and build 21 storey high rise apartments above it.
However, after a strong community campaign the Victorian State Government finally provided a heritage overlay over Preston Market, protecting it from any future redevelopment. Soon after this announcement, the owners of Preston Market promised to renew the leases of all traders for another five years.
Yet these new five year leases are no where to be seen.
So long as Preston Market is privately owned it will always be under threat. The only way that we can protect our greatest community asset in Darebin is to fight for public acquisition.
If Preston Market is publicly owned it means that we - as the community - can decide what we want to do with it and to protect it for future generations to come. It means that we can open up some of the stalls as community spaces, that we could run events there when the Market is closed, and even improve the quality of the car parking. The community could decide what is best for Preston Market. If elected, I will fight to put Preston Market in public hands!
Currently Preston Market is the only privately owned Market. Queen Vitoria Market is owned by the City of Melbourne, Prahran Market is owned by Stonnington City Council, South Melbourne Market is owned by the City of Porth Phillip, and Dandenong Market is owned by the City of Greater Dandenong.
Lets change that!
